| The Willowmore Cedar is endemic to the Baviaanskloof region and, like its counterpart in the Cedarberg of the Western Cape; this species of cedar is a threatened and almost extinct species, and generally only remains in the most inaccessible parts of the Baviaanskloof. Our farm has access to a rich and unique population of cedars due to its remote position, and is known in the area for being an ecological center of this rare species.
The bark of the Willowmore Cedar (Widdringtonia Schwarzii) is reddish grey and thin with a fibrous, flaking appearance. Leaves are thin and needle-like, later becoming scale like. Willowmore cedars are evergreen and the wood is exceptionally fragrant.
Our guesthouse is named after these magnificent trees, and the Cedar Falls Trail takes one through some of the last remaining dense stands of cedars left in the kloof.
Unfortunately with the fires of 2008 and the recent floods in 2010 and 2011, we have lost many of the cedar trees up this kloof. We hope that over the years there will be some regeneration of these magnificent trees.
